~ EPISODE #011 ~
"Monumental Ignorance"

Founded on Christianity?  That's what Chief Justice Roy Moore of the Alabama Supreme Court would have us believe of America.  Acknowledge my god or elseHe claims that because the founding fathers were religious, that means our whole country was founded on his religion, in spite of the fact that many of the founders were deists or other religious affiliations.  He also claims that the god who gave the 10 commandments "guarantees the freedom of conscience for other people to worship as they will."  Obviously, his ability to interpret the 1st commandment is as flawed as his ability to interpret the intent of our founding fathers.

I caught an interview on the Sean Hannity radio show, and grabbed a number of astonishing clips for you to check out, including several clips of wacky callers.  These people are typical of the kind of folks who, if given half the chance, would run right over our civil rights and establish a national religion, recognized in courtrooms everywhere.  What they don't seem to realize is the fact that there are thousands of other religions out there, each competing to be the one forcing itself down your throat and indoctrinating your children.  The moment they can prove their deity exists objectively, they can claim it is the foundation of anything, much less our country.

The founding fathers may have been religious, and they may have approved of allowing public officials to openly confess their beliefs with their words, but to my knowledge, not a single one of them ever suggested that our courthouses should be filled with giant monuments to the 10 commandments.  Maybe I should do a little more research, but I couldn't find it in months of looking.  Perhaps Judge Moore could find me an instance.  Here's some quotes to illustrate my point that the most influential founders were far from christian:

Supporters of Roy Moore?

"I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish church, by the Roman church, by the Greek church, by the Turkish church, by the Protestant church, nor by any church that I know of...Each of those churches accuse the other of unbelief; and for my own part, I disbelieve them all." - Thomas Paine The Age of Reason pp. 8,9

"I trust that there is not a young man now living in the United States who will not die a Unitarian." - Thomas Jefferson

"The day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter." - Thomas Jefferson (letter to J. Adams April 11,1823)

"As to Jesus of Nazareth, my Opinion of whom you particularly desire, I think the System of Morals and his Religion...has received various corrupting Changes, and I have, with most of the present dissenters in England, some doubts as to his Divinity; tho' it is a question I do not dogmatize upon, having never studied it, and think it needless to busy myself with it now, when I expect soon an opportunity of knowing the Truth with less trouble." - Benjamin Franklin, a month before he died, in A Biography in his Own Words, edited by Thomas Fleming, p. 404, (1972, Newsweek, New York, NY) quoting letter by BF to Exra Stiles March 9, 1790.

The Musikal Interlewdz for this show are "Burnin' Down the Church," from The Bob Rivers Show, and "Naked Sunday" by Stone Temple Pilots.

abraXas was noticeably absent from this show, but I look forward to his return.  At this time, I'd like to give a shout-out to some of the folks on the  Atheists Anonymous message board.  Thanks for the encouragement!
