~ EPISODE #004 ~
"Atheist Activism"

In this episode of Beware Of God!, we wanted to illustrate some of the many simple ways that atheists can get involved and put out the message that it's OK not to believe and it's NOT OK to mix religion and government.  Everlasting Godstopper joins us to discuss some of the things she does for the separation of church and state on a regular basis.  The conversation was light and humorous, and despite an embarrassing mishap on our part, she was able to get in a lot of important information to help the would-be activist to build a base of power from which to influence their representatives.

Several web sites came up during our chat:

Here are a few of her techniques:

  • Spend time in chat rooms and message boards and form a coalition of like-minded people.
  • Go to atheist rallies and conferences and attend regular atheist meet ups.
  • Send email to your representatives and remind your online friends to do the same.
  • Write letters to the editors of your local newspapers.
  • Never give up.
  • Get informed and VOTE!!!!

Sapient had his hands full producing his own show, The Book of Sapient, but he was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to talk to me about activism.  Sapient has been a veritable cyclone of atheist activity over the last few years, which made him a perfect choice to talk to about this topic.

As with Stopper, several web sites came up during the conversation:

His thoughts on activism were the following:

  • Keep an internet presence.  Let people know you are an atheist.
  • Include an Atheist Network signature in your regular email.
  • Place Atheist Network brochures/flyers in grocery stores or car windshields.
  • Don't let people label you as an "agnostic."  Own your atheism.
  • Post on tons of different message boards.  (Promote your favorite talk shows! - hehe)

The Musikal Interlewdz for this show were Hate by Kiss as a dedication to a listener who thought we were too aggressive and hateful, and Rise by Pantera to continue the theme of rising up and taking back our country.Shiny Happy Heathens

You can find a thread on the Atheist Network Message Board about this show right here.  It doesn't matter how late you catch it, we're always glad to hear your comments, though the link tags and emoticons are all phukked up on that thread due to the changeover to the new board.  Maybe if we get some more comments, we'll go back and fix a few of them.

Anyway, before I go, here's a picture of both our guests together at the Philly meetup, proving once again that atheist activism is a really good time.
